All Natural Flea Fighting Remedies
It’s itchy scratchy season for cats, dogs, and almost any pet that ventures out of doors this summer. Fleas are looking for a juicy host. To prevent your beloved cat or dog from becoming their next blood meal, there are plenty of remedies you can try aside from chemical treatments, flea baths, and collars. Plus, fleas may carry life-threatening illnesses (i.e., tapeworms, anemia, and heartworm). Here are some excellent natural remedies to combat fleas:
1. Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, aside from making a great salad dressing, is touted as a super vinegar with benefits that include improved digestion, weight loss, lower cholesterol, and blood sugar. However, apple cider vinegar is a tonic that can easily be used to deter fleas as well. Many pet owners mix half and half solution of apple cider vinegar and room temperature water to spritz on their dog or feline’s fur to deter fleas when their outside roaming or playing. This solution is also a great way to remove fleas from pet fur and skin using a flea comb.
2. Brewer’s yeast
Nope we’re not brewing beer here, we’re fighting fleas. Brewer’s yeast doubles as a wonder remedy for warding off fleas. While the science is mostly anecdotal, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) claims mixing a bit of this supplement into your dog or cat’s food will be beneficial for repelling fleas.
3. Lemon
Humans love the scent of fresh lemon. It sort of reminds us of summer or spring. But fleas heat it, which means this citrus fruit makes a powerful flea-repellent spray. Simply squeeze two lemon quarters into boiling water and let the mixture steep a minimum of 8-hours. Put the mixture into a clean spray bottle and spritz on your cat or dog’s coat, behind their ears, tail, and underbelly pet (avoiding their nose and eyes). Plants like lemongrass and lemon balm also work when planted in your yard as a flea deterrent.
4. Baking soda
Baking soda is an abrasive powder that also doubles as a great way to lift and remove fleas from infested furniture and carpets. Simply sprinkle from the box, use a thick brush to lift carpet fabric and vacuum immediately. Just be sure to immediately empty your vacuum outside to avoid fleas escaping and re-infesting your home, pets, and household.
