Everything you need to know about Fibromyalgia-2
There is still a lot that is unknown about fibromyalgia in terms of its origination and genesis and the reason behind the development of this condition especially in women more than men.
Fibromyalgia can be characterized as a medical condition that can be associated with constant musculoskeletal pain. It is a complex and a common pain disorder that causes pain widespread in the body along with tenderness to touch. Research in this field has shown that Fibromyalgia in simple terms amplifies the pain sensation that your brain processes to process pain signals.
Symptoms can sometimes begin after a physical trauma, genetics (that is it runs in the family), infection, psychological stress, and surgery.
Fibromyalgia as a medical disorder is chronic and persistent and it is not just restricted to pain on the muscles and the bones, but this pain is also accompanied by fatigue and sleeplessness or sleep disturbance and cognitive difficulties such as not able to think clearly and focus and memory issues and it also affects the mood. As this condition is accompanied by an array of associated difficulties, Fibromyalgia affects an individual not just physically but also has an impact on them mentally, socially and psychologically. Hence when looking into the treatment options, the specialized doctor will need to look into a holistic approach to treat this illness.
It needs to be noted that Fibromyalgia presently does not have a permanent cure but due to the development of modern medicine and the amount of research and study that has gone into it over the years, a variety of medications along with exercises and stress reduction and relaxation techniques can successfully help in the control of its symptoms and reduce the discomfort experienced by people.
As per the reports released by certain institutes in the country, it estimates that approximately 10 million adults in the country and 3 to 6 percent of the global population are affected by this condition. Although fibromyalgia can occur in people of all ages including children and the elderly, it’s more frequent among women. To put that in perspective, it’s about 75 to 90 percent of the people diagnosed with this condition are women.
Fibromyalgia and its symptoms can vary and overlap with other conditions hence diagnosing this can be a difficult task, but some of the most common symptoms are:
- Pain
Tenderness and widespread pain throughout the body. The pain from fibromyalgia often is described as constant and has lasted for at least 3 months. To be considered widespread, the pain should occur both above and below the waist and on both the sides of the body. - Fatigue
People with this condition often complain about waking up tired, even after sleeping for a long period of time. - Sleeplessness
There is often disruption of sleep because of pain, hence waking up disturbed. - Cognitive problems
That is having difficulties with thinking clearly, concentrating and memory. - Other symptoms
This includes depression, anxiety, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, tension, stress, gastrointestinal issues and pain in the joints.
A multidisciplinary approach needs to be taken to successfully treat fibromyalgia for management and relief of pain, such as a combination of medications, regular physical exercise, cognitive behavioral therapies, and counseling.
