Preservatives and Additives That Cause Migraines

A migraine is described as an intense headache that is characterized by incredible throbbing or pulsating. There are several side effects of migraines that also strike at the same time, including nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Those that suffer from migraines can often indicate a trigger, such as preservatives and additives used in food. Once a migraine begins it can be long lasting and difficult to find a solution that will ease the pain that is experienced.

These are some of the most common preservatives and additives that cause migraines, and that you should avoid if you suffer from regular migraines:

1. Tyramine
Tyramine is known for causing hypertension, which is one of the key triggers to bringing on an intense headache or migraine. The substance can be an additive, but it is a natural forming additive that is used to preserve food. Most foods that are found to contain tyramine are going to be those that are high in protein.

2. Nitrites
Nitrites can trigger a migraine when they cause the blood vessels in your body to dilate. Migraine sufferers often indicate that after eating certain foods with nitrites they are guaranteed to get a migraine. The key is to look at those foods that do not initially contain nitrites, but contain nitrite producing ingredients when they are consumed. Leafy greens, chocolate, and processed meats are all foods to watch out for.

3. Monosodium glutamate or MSG
Monosodium glutamate is often mentioned as one of the most common triggers among those that are affected by preservatives and additives that are used in food. Commonly known as MSG, the additive can trigger a migraine relatively fast after consumption, in addition to other painful symptoms like diarrhea and cramping. This additive is often used in Asian cuisine and in meat that is preserved and packaged.

4. Flavor enhancers
Flavor enhancers are often a cause of migraines, though specific ones are not known to cause those migraines collectively for one sufferer or all. The many different flavor enhancers each react differently to the individual that has consumed them, so it is important to pay attention to what you’ve had to eat prior to experiencing a migraine, or to avoid flavor enhancers completely.

5. Aspartame
Aspartame is one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners, but it is also one of the most commonly complained about causes of migraines and symptoms of migraines. Many low fat and low cal products that reduce the amount of sugar used with the use of aspartame should be avoided.

One of the best ways to avoid experiencing a migraine because of food is to become experienced at reading ingredient labels.
