For people with pets, the health of the four-legged members of their family is as important as the health of the two-legged ones. Like humans, dogs can suffer from a range of infections and health issues. Some medicines are used more commonly than others. Some of the best pet meds for dogs are:

Metronidazole
Metronidazole is often prescribed for dogs diagnosed with a giardia infection. It may also be used to treat trichomonas, Entamoeba, and balantidium. This pet med can be easily absorbed into the body and has an anti-inflammatory effect on the bowel. Metronidazole may be often used in combination with other medicines.

Famotidine
Famotidine is a common remedy for dogs with an upset stomach. It contains an H2 receptor antagonist that reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach. This non-prescription medication is very effective in treating stomach ulcers. It may also be used to treat GERD, esophagitis, and gastritis.

Diphenhydramine
Dogs can have allergies too. In such cases, diphenhydramine or Benadryl as it is also known is a great pet med. This is an over-the-counter remedy that blocks the effects of H1 receptors on blood vessels and smooth muscles to soothe reactions to insect bites, stings and vaccine reactions.

Doxepin
Doxepin is an antidepressant that is often used to treat anxiety and depression. However, pet meds may have side effects and should be avoided for dogs who are prone to seizures.

Tramadol
Tramadol is a common pain reliever for dogs suffering from moderate to severe pain. It may be used to treat pain following surgery as well as chronic pain caused by other factors. The medicine works by binding and blocking the opioid receptors in the brain that transmit pain messages. It may also be used as an alternative remedy to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Prednisone

Ketoconazole

This is a popular emergency emetic for dogs. A small dose can induce vomiting by generating bubbles in the stomach. These bubbles stretch the stomach and make the dog throw up whatever was accidentally swallowed.

Doxycycline
Doxycycline is used to treat a number of bacterial infections including Lyme disease. This pet med binds itself to the ribosomes of bacteria to inhibit protein synthesis. This keeps the bacteria from multiplying. It is usually considered as a long term treatment. As the remedy works, the infection will be cleared and any pain and inflammation being experienced by your pet will also reduce.
