Things to know about asthma
Asthma is an airways disease that is chronic in nature which is related to the transportation of air from and to the lungs. There is no complete cure to this chronic disease, however, there are methods that can manage the disease and let the person suffering from it to lead a proper active life.
When a person is suffering from asthma, the inner walls of the airways that are known as the bronchial tubes are either inflamed or swollen. This inflammation or swelling makes the airways highly sensitive and prone to irritation and also increases the risk of allergic reactions in a person. Also, the airways of the asthma patients during the swelling become narrow and hence the supply of the air to the lungs is also restricted.
In the case of an allergic reaction, the walls of the airways will be swollen while the surrounding muscles of the airways will also tighten up. This makes the movement of the air difficult from in or out of the lungs.
Approximately 8.3% of individuals in the country have some or the other form of this airway chronic disease.
There are different forms of asthma and the causes underlying this chronic disease also differ.
The symptoms of this chronic disease are present in timed attacks or periodic episodes of the tightening of the chest, breathlessness, coughing and wheezing.
When a person develops asthma, the airways get swollen and become highly sensitive to the materials that the patient inhales. The increased sensitivity causes a reaction and the muscles that are responsible for controlling the airways become tight. In this incidence, the airways are restricted to such an extent that it may result in excessive production of the mucus.
The inflammation in the respiratory system of the person can cause severe symptoms that are associated with the attack of asthma. The attack of asthma occurs when the associated symptoms are the most severe. These symptoms can crop up all of a sudden and the intensity of these symptoms can either be mild or severe.
There are some attacks of asthma in which the swelling of the airway worsens severely that the airways can get completely shut thus preventing the oxygen from reaching the lungs and also stop it from entering the blood and reaching the essential organs of the body. This attack of asthma needs the patient to be hospitalized without any delay as it can prove to be life-threatening.
When the asthma attack starts, the airways allow a sufficient amount of air to enter the lungs. However, carbon dioxide is not let to exit the lungs at an equivalent amount of pace. If the gas is not expelled then carbon dioxide can become poisonous. If this sort of asthma attack prolongs, then it may cause the accumulation of the gas in the lungs of the person. Further, it may also result in a reduction of the amount of oxygen from getting mixed in the bloodstream.
The right kind of asthma controls can help in the reduction of the effects of this disease on the daily life of the person.
