Types of anemia and its causes
Anemia occurs due to the deficiency of red blood cells in the body. This, in turn, cause insufficient oxygen supply to the organs. There are quite a few types of anemia.
Some of the commonly occurring types of anemia are caused due to the following factors:
Iron deficiency anemia
One of the most common types of anemia is caused due to a lack of iron in the body’s system. The bone marrow of the human body requires iron in order to produce hemoglobin, which is essential to the red blood cells. The lack of iron is quite common in pregnant women. Some of the other causes of iron deficiency could be the result of heavy menstrual bleeding, cancer, ulcers, and overuse of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin.
Vitamin deficiency anemia
The production of healthy red blood cells is dependent on iron as well as folate and Vitamin B12. A diet deficient of these elements can lead to underproduction of red blood cells. However, in some cases, despite consuming a sufficient amount of Vitamin B12, the body is inherently incapable of processing the vitamin. This leads to pernicious anemia.
Anemia of chronic diseases
Specific diseases such as cancer, AIDS/HIV, kidney diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, etc, tend to interfere with the production of the red blood cells in the body.
Aplastic anemia
This particular type of anemia is not only rare but also life-threatening, especially when the red blood cells are insufficient in the body. Some of the causes associated with these types of anemia include certain types of medication, infections, exposure to chemical toxins, autoimmune diseases, etc.
Anemia associated with bone marrow diseases
There are certain types of anemia which are caused because of diseases like leukemia and myelofibrosis; as they directly impact the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. The intensity of these anemic conditions can be mild or life-threatening, It usually depends on the type of cancer and disorders the individual is suffering from.
Hemolytic anemia
In this anemic condition, the destruction of red blood cells occurs at a pace more rapid than their production. As a result, the bone marrow fails to replace them on time. There are certain types of blood disease which destroy red blood cells at an alarming rate. This types of hemolytic anemia can occur as a result of inheriting the condition or it can develop at the later stages in life.
Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited form of hemolytic anemia. It occurs as a result of the hemoglobin’s defective form which forces the red blood cells to assume a type of abnormal crescent shape that is similar to a sickle.
